It's Women's History Month, which means we're all about girl power right now. Issa Rae is here for it, too. The Insecure creator teamed up with LinkedIn for #InItTogether, an initiative that celebrates women. Last week, Rae joined comedian and late night talk show host Chelsea Handler for an intimate conversation at The Art of Elysium in Los Angeles.
In a promo video, Rae touches on the powerful woman mentors in her life such as Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes and Mara Brock Akil, who shared with her their storied of learning how to speak up for themselves, and say "no," as a woman working in such male-dominated fields as the entertainment industry.
In last week's conversation with Handler, Rae spoke about the fluidity of success, how fear is her motivation, making your voice heard and coming from the corporate world as a woman.
“Working in the corporate world, I never asked for a raise," noted Rae. "As an employer of men and women I’ve seen men have asked for their work and have had no issue and a lot of the women have not, so I make sure to empower them to ask … keeping everything transparent is so important."
Issa Rae is definitely one of the hottest stars right now with her HBO hit Insecure returning soon for its third season, flexin' with a Cover Girl contract, a new film role in The Hate U Give and more. As a prominent figure in pop culture, Rae's voice is important; she definitely knows the significance of her platform. However, she also knows that in a social media-driven culture, anyone can use their voice for change.
“This is the time where everyone has a voice," Rae said. "There are so many platforms dedicated to giving the average person a voice, so you can speak out … in a moment you can be seen and heard. This is an opportune time if you have something to say to speak out, and magical things can happen.”
