Chicago artist Jamila Woods is celebrating the re-release of her album, HEAVN by releasing a music video for her single, "Holy!"
The album will be released in both physical and digital format via Jagjaguwar and Closed Sessions. The album was originally only available via SoundCloud.
"Holy," meant to express self-affirmation and self-love, is beautifully illustrated through artful special effects and through graceful interpretive dance in its music video. Directed by Brown Girls co-creator Sam Bailey, this music video is illuminating and full of black female empowerment.
HEAVN, released in July 2016, is Woods' debut album and serves as an ode to her city of Chicago. "HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in," she told SPIN at the time of the project's release. The album was ranked as the 36th best album of 2016 by Pitchfork Media.
Jamila Woods is best known for her collaborative works with Chance the Rapper on the hit song "Sunday Candy" (Surf) as well as "Blessings" (Coloring Book). She is is also featured on the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song "White Privilege II."
Not one to be pigeonholed, Woods is also the associate artistic director of Young Chicago Authors, the non-profit organization behind the Louder Than a Bomb youth poetry slam festival.
Check out the video above, and remember, just like Woods croons, "woke up out of bed with a smile, said I'm lovin' me," every day is an opportunity to showcase our self-love!
