Jennifer Hudson has been killing it in The Color Purple on Broadway, and now you’ll be able to catch her in another live production – Hairspray Live! on NBC.

The Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG and Grammy Award-winner will play Motormouth Maybelle, the character that Queen Latifah played in the 2007 film. Legendary R&B singer-songwriter Ruth Brown played the character in the 1988 version, so Hudson is in extremely good company.

She will star alongside multi Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein, who returns to the role of Edna Turnblad. This year’s live adaptation of the classic story will be directed by Alex Rudzinski, who also was at the helm for Grease Live!

In his statement about the production, Robert Greenblatt, the Chairman of NBC Entertainment said, “We’re also so grateful that the incomparable Jennifer Hudson will play Motormouth Maybelle and we know her rendition of ‘I Know Where I’ve Been’ will literally stop the show.”

Hairspray Live! has a scheduled air date of Wednesday, December 7 at 8 pm ET/PT and will be held in Los Angeles.
