Rep. John Conyers recently announced his retirement from his House of Representatives post amid sexual assault allegations. Now, his son has been put into the scrutinized spotlight. 

John Conyers III was arrested this year in relation to domestic violence charges, according to documents obtained by NBC News. Conyers III wasn't prosecuted, though. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office cited a "lack of independent witnesses" and, based on case paperwork, concluded that it "could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the victim’s injury was not accidentally sustained."

Prosecutors had claimed that the alleged victim didn't have visible injuries beyond a small stab wound on her lower bicep. The victim was unnamed and called the police claiming that Conyers III "body slammed her on the bed and then on the floor where he pinned her down and spit on her," after suspecting her of cheating on him. According to her report, the stab wound came from him taking a knife he grabbed, swinging it at her. 

Conyers III also called the police on her and claimed she was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, pulled the knife on him and received the stab wound during the struggle to take it away from her. Conyers III was taken into custody and released the same day in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Conyers III is expected to replace his father in the Congress seat. "I have a great family here and especially in my oldest boy, John Conyers III, who, incidentally, I endorse to replace me in my seat in Congress," Conyers previously said in a WPZR Detroit radio interview. 

Conyers III spoke with reporters in regard to his father's sexual harassment allegations noting, "with sexual assault, women are to be believed."  

Michigan state Sen. Ian Conyers, the grandson of Rep. Conyers' brother also plans to run for the now open seat.
