You may recognize Kandi Burruss from the hit Bravo series, The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA). Burruss was introduced to the reality TV show back in 2009 in its second-season premiere and has since appeared in several spinoff shows, including The Kandi Factory and Kandi Koated Nights. Now Burruss is starring in yet another spinoff series, Kandi & the Gang, which follows the crew of Old Lady Gang (OLG), Kandi’s family restaurant in Atlanta.
Kandi & the Gang premiered on Mar. 6 2022 on Bravo. The series premiere garnered 491,000 viewers—which in comparison was notably lower than some of Kandi’s other Bravo spinoffs. But the show still has an impressive following which Kandi equates to the hilarious and entertaining nature of her family and the restaurant staff.
“On Kandi & the Gang you’re gonna get plenty of laughter because my family and the people that work in my restaurant, they are all like walking comedians,” Kandi told E! News. “Of course, you’re gonna get your share of drama and emotional moments. I think the thing about Kandi & the Gang is, because my family is a part of the restaurant, it can be a bit stressful at times.”
Fans of The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Kandi’s various spinoffs are sure to enjoy this behind-the-scenes series as well. So if you’d like to learn more about the show and where to watch it, read on.
Burruss owns and operates the restaurant alongside her husbad
The restaurant was conceptualized in 2016, by Kandi Burruss and her husband, Todd Tucker. The husband and wife duo wanted to share the southern comfort recipes that they’d grown up on with restaurant-goers. The couple met on the set of RHOA in 2011 and they’ve been married for eight years, and have two kids together.
Both Burruss and Tucker have spoken publicly about their relationship and how they strive to continuously support one another. “Todd and I, we always encourage each other,” Burruss told The Daily Dish. “And then the cool thing about Todd is, even when I get disappointed or let down on something, and I’ll be like, ugh, like almost about to fall into that slump of feeling like ‘forget it,’ he’s like, ‘Get it back together. No, you got this. Come on. You got it, so don’t fall into that.’ He definitely hypes me up to feel like I can take on the world.”
The 'Old Lady Gang' consists of 3 familial Black women
The restaurant’s namesake, “The Old Lady Gang,” is dedicated to Burruss’ mother Joyce Jones, and aunts Bertha Jones, and Nora Wilcox, affectionately known as the “Old Lady Gang.” You’ll likely recognize the trio from Real Housewives of Atlanta as they were frequently featured in the series, known for their outspoken and fiery personalities.
Family means a lot to Burruss and she accredits her restaurant’s success to these three women. “Joyce Jones, Bertha Jones & Nora Wilcox are the original OLG. If there’s one thing that you don’t have to question when it comes to these three firecrackers, is that family truly comes first as far as they’re concerned,” states the restaurant’s official website. “They’re three enthusiastic sisters from Atlanta that certainly know their way around a kitchen.”
There's a workplace romance brewing at the restaurant
Old Lady Gang’s manager, Brandon Black, and bartender, Dom’Unique Variety have a lot of onscreen sexual tension. The coworkers have a very flirtatious relationship and are clearly attracted to one another. In fact, Black admitted on the show that he only started working at OLG after visiting the restaurant as a customer and eyeing Variety behind the bar.
Romantic coworker relationships can be a slippery slope and a conflict of interest, which owners Kandi and Todd have taken note of. “I have mixed feelings about that,” Kandi told E! News about the relationship. “It’s really against our rules. It’s in our rule book that they’re not supposed to be dating within the restaurant…Brendan and Dom, they really hit it off. But Todd and I, we met in the workplace, obviously, and we’re married and happy so I feel like it’s kind of hypocritical of me to try to stop them.”
Kandi’s family and restaurant staff sometimes “bump heads”
It can be difficult running a business when your employees are a mix of family, friends, and staff. Kandi Burruss knows this all too well as a business owner whose employees are a mix of family and non-family members, she is no stranger to disagreements in the workplace.
In an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, it was revealed that some of Kandi’s family members may have had a falling out with a few of the restaurant staff. When asked by a fan who “bumps heads” with the restaurant’s staff the most, Kandi replied, “I guess it would have to be between my mama and Aunt Nora.” Aunt Nora later clarified that she’d had a falling out “with a person, but not the staff.”
