In an outlandish rant, a Kansas official claimed he and a Black woman were a part of a master race because of their teeth.
Leavenworth County Commissioner Louis Klemp has ignited a controversy after statements made during a land-use study meeting on Tuesday.
KCTV 5 reports Klemp is not an elected official. Instead, a Republican committee appointed him.
A Black woman representing a landscape and architectural firm had presented the study to commissioners when Klemp made the off-handed remark. No other statements or comments prompted Klemp, according to Commissioner Bob Holland and news outlet KSHB.
“I don't want you to feel like I'm picking on you. Because we are part of the master race,” he said. “You have a gap in your teeth. We are part of the master race, don’t you forget that.”
The term "master race" has been used by white supremacists to justify genocide, discrimination and racism. It originates from the mythological Aryan race propagated by Hitler's Third Reich.
Holland had criticized Klemp for similar statements before this most recent incident. Without question, he believes Klemp is a racist. In November 2017, Klemp praised defeated Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee during a meeting.
"Not everybody does them all because you know we have Robert E. Lee,” Klemp said last year. “Oh, God Robert E. Lee, wonderful part of history.”
Holland demanded Klemp to step down, but the official remains on the commission.
“What’s this master race?" Holland asked KCTV5. “None of us are a master race. We are all Americans; we are all human beings. I think he is a racist. I do. I think he owes an apology to that woman. I think he owes an apology to the whole commission. And the county.”
