10-year-old Amariyanna “Mari” Copeny, who is also known as Little Miss Flint, worked with the nonprofit organization, Pack Your Back, this week to help distribute school supplies to students within her hometown of Flint, Michigan.

The city of Flint has and continues to struggle against several long-term public health issues as a result of the ongoing water crisis which began three years ago.

Aware of the strain that the water crisis has put on many families as well as the fact that many Flint students are in dire need of school supplies, Copeny decided to partner with Pack Your Back in order to help give back to her community.

“I wanted to make sure kids got the best start possible to the school year and for their parents to not have to worry about having to buy supplies,” Copeny told the Huffington Post.

She was able to give away more than 1,000 backpacks to every single student that came to the event, and in raised approximately $10,000 online for more supplies.

This year was a big step up from last year's event, during which Copeny helped to fill 100 backpacks with school supplies.

Pack Your Back is a nonprofit created by Galen Miller and several other students from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. After visiting Flint during the height of its water crisis, they wanted to find a way to help the residents of the city.

Miller, founder and executive director of Pack Your Back, told HuffPost, “We saw the need that was in the city at the time during the water crisis for water, but we also saw how it was having an impact on students.”

Follow the success in Flint, Pack Your Back plans to hold a similar giveaway in Detroit.

Copeny also has plans to continue her activism. “I’m a Flint kid that wants to help other Flint kids,” she said.
