Louis Gossett Jr. has been cast as Halle Berry’s father in CBS’ new Steven Spielberg-produced futuristic thriller series Extant, which debuts on Wednesday, July 2, at 9/8c.
The series will center on a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family, after she returns home after a year in space. Her experiences lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history.
Vague, but sounds like it could be epic, as only a Steven Spielberg series can be!
Of course Halle is playing the astronaut.
Gossett will play her good-natured but unreliable father – a retired doctor living out his last years in an isolated community, which keeps him out of touch with the rest of the world, including his daughter and her family.
Goran Visnjic, Grace Gummer, Camryn Manheim and Michael O’Neill will also star in Extant.
“There’s only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career,” Spielberg said. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.”
Halle Berry added: “I’m always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I’ll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I’ll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one. I’ve found amazing partners in CBS’s Nina Tassler and Les Moonves, and the incredible Steven Spielberg, along with his Amblin production team, whose vision and creativity in storytelling is unparalleled.“
The script was penned by Mickey Fisher, who will executive produce alongside Spielberg, Greg Walker, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
