Lupita Nyong'o, who portrays Nakia in Black Panther, is set to receive a special honor in her Kenyan hometown of Kisumu. According to The Daily Nation, Kisumu will host two advance screenings — one private and one public — on February 13.
IMAX marketing manager Flora Njagi said that it was important to have the screenings in Kisumu because Lupita is "a girl from that soil."
The event is also meant to launch a long in the works initiative by Peter Anyang' Nyong'o, Nyong'o's father, who happens to be the governor of Kisumu County.
“Governor Nyong’o wants to make Kisumu the hub of performing arts, and what better way to hit the ground running than by screening this premiere?” Kisumu county spokesperson Aloice Ager told BuzzFeed. “He wants people to be able to make a living out of performing arts. That is one of our key agendas, as well as bringing theater, opera and an integrated performing arts center to Kisumu.”
Furthermore, Ager said that the screening will give people outside of Kisumu a view of the region not tied to politics; the area largely supported opposition leader Raila Odinga in Kenya's controversial elections. Odinga dropped out what would have been a second presidential race after the country's Supreme Court declared his rival's win in the first campaign invalid, and had himself sworn in as the “People’s President of Kenya.”
“We are passionate about whatever we do in the community and the region,” Ager said. “If it’s about resistance, we resist passionately, but it’s also a place where good things happen.”
It hasn't yet been confirmed whether or not Nyong'o will attend either of the screenings, but many of Kisumu's citizens are holding out hope that she will make an appearance.
