As more primary races come to an end around the United States, Democrats and Republicans are squaring off for a high-stakes Election Day this November to determine control of Congress. The youngest member of Congress, however, has also become the first member to secure reelection, and the Florida Democrat has now turned to boosting other party members in their races.
Gen Z Rep. Maxwell Frost has ‘technically’ already won reelection
Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost will be returning to Congress in January without having to defeat a single Democratic or Republican opponent. In June, the second-term Congressman won the Democratic primary for the 10th District of Florida as the only candidate on the ballot. No Republican is running against him, leaving Frost again unopposed for November’s general election. In a statement issued after his primary victory, Frost pledged to continue representing the people of Central Florida while also working to get fellow Democrats elected. “Even though I am running unopposed, we’re building our biggest and strongest campaign yet,” Rep. Frost said. He echoed these sentiments in a recent social media post. “I’m technically the first person elected to the next Congress,” Frost declared. “Now, I’m focused on electing good people up and down the ballot. I’ve hired 86 Organizers this summer to help do this. School Board, City Council, State House, and Congress.”
Frost made endorsements in Florida, Orange County races
Frost became the first major political figure to endorse David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who switched parties after publicly clashing with President Trump, in the Democratic primary race for governor of Florida. Frost cited Jolly’s opposition to building new AI data centers in Florida as a major reason for his endorsement. In Florida’s U.S. Senate race, in which Democrats hope to unseat GOP incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody, Frost has endorsed Democratic primary candidate Angie Nixon, a Black progressive who currently serves as a Florida state representative, over the more high-profile retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman. Frost is additionally backing several candidates in races for Florida State House seats as well as elected positions in Orange County.
Competitions between older vs. younger Democrats, centrists vs. progressives
Frost’s endorsements and groundwork may prove pivotal as the Democratic Party not only seeks to defeat Republicans but also wrestles with its own identity, as progressives, including those associated with the Democratic Socialists of America, run against moderates and younger Democrats seek in many cases to replace older, more establishment politicians. Frost is in some ways a symbol of this competition; he became the youngest person in Congress after he was first elected in 2022, and still holds that distinction. He is also the first member of Gen Z to be elected to Congress, though several Gen Z candidates are running for House or state legislature seats this year. “There’s less and less people who value seniority as their top item. So they’re looking at other things,” Frost told Bloomberg Government. “It’s not really about age; it’s about, are you the person for this moment in this position? And sometimes age might impact that. Sometimes it doesn’t.”
