Michael Kenneth Williams has booked the starring role in IFC’s "The Spoils of Babylon" series sequel, to be titled "The Spoils Before Dying," the network announced today.
Set in the Los Angeles’ 1950s jazz scene, the pulp-mystery serial will follow Rock Banyon (played by Williams), a down-and-out jazz pianist who becomes the prime suspect when his lead singer (who also happens to be his lover) is found murdered.
To prove his innocence, and avoid a death penalty, Rock uses the next 72 hours to clear his name, on the run, in a quest for the truth loaded with sex, murder, love and betrayal.
In addition, Will Ferrell will reprise his role as Eric Jonrosh, the fictional author-turned-director who introduces each chapter of his book-to-screen adaptions.
The original "Spoils of Babylon" was a 2014 miniseries written by Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele, directed by Piedmont, and starring Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, and Will Ferrell. The idea is intended to be a spoof of the epic-scale "TV event" miniseries adapted from bestselling novels which were prevalent on American network television in the 1970s and 80s.
The miniseries premiered on IFC on January 9, 2014. For her performance as Cynthia Morehouse, Kristen Wiig was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie.
