On the show, Obama dished on the gift she and Barack received from Melania Trump on President Trump’s inauguration day.
The former first lady told Ellen, however, that the exchange was just as awkward as it looked.
Under normal circumstances, Michelle said the Obamas had “all this protocol” to deal with gifts from heads of state and visitors to the White House. But this was their first time leaving the White House, and most of their staff was gone.
With “a state visit … they tell you you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” Obama said. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘Okay, where…? What am I supposed to do with this gift?”
Michelle hoped someone would save her. But she was out of luck.
“Everyone cleared out, and no one would come and take the box.
“I’m thinking, ‘Do we take the picture?’ And then my husband saved the day,” she said. “He grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, ‘What do you do with the box?’”
And just what was in the trouble-making Tiffany’s box?
“It was a lovely frame,” Obama said.
