NBC won Wednesday night among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, with strong debut results from "Mr. Robinson," the new summer comedy which aired 2 back-to-back episodes, starring Craig Robinson as lead singer and keyboardist of the funk band Nasty Delicious, who finds himself short on cash, and takes a job as a substitute high school music teacher. Meagan Good, Amandla Stenberg, Brandon T. Jackson, Spencer Grammer, Tim Bagley and Peri Gilpin round out the cast.
With 4.6 million viewers. "Mr. Robinson" is the most-watched summer-comedy debut on any of the Big 4 networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) since 2007 (6.191 million for "Creature Comforts" on CBS June 4, 2007). It was also the #2 highest-rated summer comedy debut of the Big 4 networks since 2009.
A second episode of "Mr. Robinson" (from 9:30-10 p.m. ET) retained most of the prior half-hour’s strong series premiere rating, drawing 3.8 million viewers overall.
NBC initially announced that "Mr. Robinson" and its other summer series, "The Carmichael Show," would premiere on the same night, in the same hour-long-block of comedies with "Mr. Robinson" premiering at 9 pm, immediately followed by "The Carmichael Show" at 9:30 pm, on August 5.
But the network later split them up, with "Mr. Robinson" airing back-to-back episodes for three weeks beginning with its premiere, Wednesday, August 5 (9-10 p.m.), and "The Carmichael Show" following the same strategy, airing back-to-back episodes in the timeslot, kicking off on August 26.
Meanwhile, "The Carmichael Show" is inspired by Jerrod’s relationships with his say-anything contrarian father, therapist-in training girlfriend, ever-hustling brother and mother, who is always, always, always right with Jesus.
Amber West, Lil Rel Howery, David Alan Grier, and Loretta Devine co-star.
Did you watch either or both premiere episodes of "Mr Robinson" last night? And if so, your reactions? I have some catching up to do… so much to watch and do, so little time. But feel free to get ahead of me and discuss. I’ll jump in later…
