Bakari Henderson was a 22-year-old University of Arizona graduate with a bright future that was cut short when he was murdered in Greece while on vacation. Nearly a year later, the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) has created a scholarship fund to honor the fallen scholar.

According to the NBMBAA, the Bakari Henderson Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the memory of Bakari by financially awarding students who want to participate in a study abroad program while attending a 4-year college.

In a statement issued by the organization to Black Enterprise, the scholarship continues “the legacy of education and cultural diversity,” which Bakari valued.

“The educational scholarship fund aims to motivate future leaders to take advantage of every educational opportunity that allows them the exposure of studying abroad,” the statement said, according to the publication.

The 22-year-old was familiar with the impact of scholarships. He reportedly won a full scholarship to the University of Arizona where he was also a member of NBMBAA. In addition to a scholarship from the university, he was a recipient of the NBMBAA China Europe International Business School scholarship, the world’s largest executive MBA program.

Although he was a young man on his way to greatness, a bar fight claimed his life. According to CBS,  Bakari and some friends were at a bar on the Greek island of Zakynthos. When he and his friends set down their drinks at the other end of a table where two men were sitting, the two men reportedly grabbed the beers, smashed them on the table and brandished the shattered bottles as weapons. Police say at least 10 people followed Henderson out of the bar, including the bouncer and another employee, and are now accused of beating Henderson and leaving him unconscious in the street.

Through this scholarship, Bakari's mission will live on. The first recipient of the scholarship will be awarded in May 2018 with students set to receive the scholarship annually.
