Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson honored his late friend Nipsey Hussle during the team's season opener on Sunday.
USA Today reports Jackson paid tribute by wearing custom-made cleats during pregame warmups, with one cleat showing a picture of the late rapper and the second cleat featuring the words "rest in paradise."
Jackson also went to Instagram to post different types of cleats which he could wear throughout the season to honor his friend. The wide receiver said he plans to auction his cleats and give the proceeds to Hussle's kids.
Marcus Rivero of Soles By Sir designed the shoes. Rivero told TMZ that Jackson specifically requested the designs and that there will be more custom shoes to come. The NFL only allows custom cleats to be worn in games during “My Cause, My Cleats" throughout week 13 of the season, Eagles Wire reported.
Jackson, however, wore the cleats during pre-game warmups.
Jackson and the late philanthropist and rapper grew up in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Hussle was shot and killed earlier this year at the age of 33.
Jackson started his career with the Eagles in 2008 and played there until 2013. He came back to the team this year after spending the past five seasons in Washington and Tampa Bay.
The 32-year-old receiver had eight catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's season opener against the Washington Redskins. Other athletes have also honored Nipsey Hussle throughout the year.
Clippers center Montrezl Harrell wore custom shoes during a playoff game to honor the rapper, and Rockets guard Russell Westbrook paid tribute by totaling 20 points, 20 assists and 20 rebounds in a game.
"20 plus 20 plus 20 …. they know what that means," Westbrook told TNT. "That's for my bro. Rest in peace, Nipsey."
As Blavity previously reported, Westbrook's 20-20-20 game was dedicated to Hussle's Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips gang.
