Nicki Minaj, no stranger to shade or to internet beef, has made waves again with a statement she posted to Instagram on race in rap.
According to Teen Vogue, Minaj posted a screenshot of the iTunes Top 10 Rap Songs list with the now deleted caption, "It’s a great time to be a white rapper in America huh? These are the top 10 rap songs on US iTunes. S/O to Em & Post. Two of my faves. Congrats to Em on his new album. #Motorsport put dat thing in sport.”
Reactions to the post were mixed, with users wondering if Minaj's comments were snark or nah. Was she being sarcastic? Was she genuinely praising white rappers?
It depends on who you ask, with some believing Minaj was trying to make a point:
Can we just take a minute to appreciate Nicki Minaj calling out the white male rapper epidemic we have going on. I swear if I have to hear one more song by any of them…— Cherchez la femme (@AriLilKitty) December 17, 2017
Just had this convo. White rappers can spit some ok shit and become Elvis who also used black music to become the KING. White people want white people who do black things— greeneyedrish (@rish2028) December 17, 2017
@NICKIMINAJ was right. When 8/10 rappers in the iTunes/Billboard hip-hop/rap charts are white that tells us that the game is being GENTRIFIED.10-20 years from now black kids growing up are going to be like "rap? Thats white people music" like with rock and house/techno.

While some others took her words literally:

uhh she never said she wasn't happy…— mariamyupperz (@mariamyupperz) December 17, 2017
Some attacked Minaj for her comments:
Nicki Minaj worried bout white rappers dominating iTunes when she need to be worried bout that played out flow she got.

Its kind of ironic that Nicki Minaj put up the post talking about it being a good time for white rappers but if she was a white girl that came out how she did, we wouldnt allow some culture vulture to come for Lil’Kim like that, so being black really worked in her favor.

But more still defended her:
