Progress has been made in the Freddie Gray trial thanks to the Maryland Court of Appeals. In December Officer William Porter’s trial was declared a mistrial after the jury couldn’t reach a decision. Following the mistrial State Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office requested that Officer Porter testify against all five of his fellow officers. This push to have him testify in all five trials potentially violated his 5th amendment right that protects him against self incrimination. This violation of his constitutional right was brought before the Maryland Court of Appeals (Maryland’s highest court) where it has been decided that he will testify in all five trials of his fellow officers with limited immunity. Limited immunity in the case of Porter means that what he says can’t be used against him in his own trial. Since this decision has been handed down, the trials of the remaining officers can begin.

As of now none of the trials have been scheduled to begin and it has not been made public in which order they will begin. Hopefully, this provides some hope to those still questioning if there will be justice in the death of Freddie Gray.
