Singer and songwriter R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday for federal racketeering and sex trafficking, CNN reports.

As Blavity previously reported, R. Kelly was found guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering charges in 2021. Fifty witnesses testified against the 55-year-old during the trial.

During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors requested that R. Kelly be sentenced to more than 25 years in prison. The singer’s lawyers, however, argued for a sentence under 10 years, citing his “traumatic childhood” and “severe history of sexual abuse,” according to The New York Times.

Prosecutors wrote a sentencing letter stating that Kelly has shown no remorse and that his actions were “fueled by narcissism.”

“He committed these crimes using his fame and stardom as both a shield, which prevented close scrutiny or condemnation of his actions,” prosecutors wrote, according to The Times. “And a sword, which gave him access to wealth and a network of enablers to facilitate his crimes, and an adoring fan base from which to cull his victims.”

Before issuing the sentence, the judge listened to multiple impact statements from victims.

Afterward, his lawyer said “he’s not a predator” and that “he was prepared for it.”

The Chicago native has faced years of sexual abuse allegations from women and young girls.

In 2002, he was indicted on child pornography charges and was later acquitted.
