On Monday, Kendrex J. White, a man thought to be a student, casually walked the campus of the University of Texas at Austin and began randomly stabbing students with a "bowie-style" hunting knife, wounding three people and killing one. According to UT Austin Police Chief David Carter, White may have been "suffering from mental health issues." In an interview with CNN, Carter said that the suspect had been involuntarily committed for treatment and later released in another city. "This was not a conspiracy," Carter said. "This was not about a person who had a vendetta." Austin Police Chief Brian Manley added, "There is no evidence linking this to any part of a larger plan." Regardless of motive, students and faculty at UT Austin are still reeling from the horrific incident and mourning the loss of Harrison Brown, the freshman who was killed in White's heinous rampage.
Unfortunately, a neo-Nazi organization is exploiting the incident to promote racist ideologies around campus. Students have reported flyers depicting a racist caricature of a black man holding a knife, captioned: “Around blacks … never relax.” UT student Kim Nguyen, found a flyer on an emergency call machine and posted it on Facebook.
The controversial flyer contains the web address of The Daily Stormer which, according to the New York Times, is a racist online community begun by 30-year-old Andrew Anglin in 2013. While the imagery on the flyer suggests that its distribution was triggered by the stabbing incident, this isn't the first time that signs targeting immigrants, minorities, and Muslims have been found on campus. In fact, in February, UT President Gregory L. Fenves called for a town hall to address the issue.
According to The Daily Texan, the University of Texas at Austin President Gregory L. Fenves has issued a statement condemning the more recent incident of racism.
