Harvard University has named Rihanna as the recipient of the prestigious Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian of the Year Award for 2017. The singer will accept the honor on the university's campus next Tuesday, February 28. When asked to give a statement on why Fenty was chosen, director of the Harvard Foundation, S. Allen Counter, gave quite the statement. "Rihanna has charitably built a state-of- the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados. She has also created the Clara and Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program [named for her grandmother and grandfather] for students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries, and supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls and those affected by lack of access to education in the world today."

Rih is in great company as the new recipient of the award. Actor James Earl Jones, activist Malala Yousafzai, and tennis player/activist Arthur Ashe have also been honored by Harvard University.

The free event at Sanders Theatre is scheduled to begin at 4 PM. Student IDs are required for entry and no more than two tickets can be bought at a time.
