Former Florence, South Carolina school board member Glenn Odom used the racial slur "darkies" to describe some of his fellow board members in an email to a district office employee back in August.

At the time of the email, Odom was representing the District 5 area of Florence School District One. According to SC Morning News, Odom was still on the board at the time he sent the email in which he was looking to get a ride from another board member.

Odom's email was sent to SC Morning News from an anonymous source and stated: “Would you be so kind as to send an email out to the Board asking if I could get a ride? Just don’t send it to the darkies.” Odom then followed up the original email with: “That was in jest about the darkies.”

Odom said to SC Morning News that board chairman and vice chair confronted him about his remarks and the board addressed the issue during its regular meeting. Odom has since moved out of the district he represented and after the controversy, apologized and resigned from his position. He previously served as a board member for more than 25 years.

"It was a mistake,” Odom said. “I should not have done it.”

Odom apologized to African-American board members, but he said one of the board members – Alexis Pipkins Sr. (District 4) – won't return his phone calls. Per Fox 4, Pipkins said Odom's apology is not enough. According to Pipkins, the board wasn't informed about the email until a month later; he now wants all district emails to be reviewed.

Pipkins held a news conference on Friday about the recent controversy. Watch and listen to his full statement about Odom's use of a racial slur in the video below.
