A North Carolina school resource officer has been terminated after being seen treating a child as if he were a rag doll reports the News Observer.

Surveillance video posted to Facebook shows a Vance County Middle School resource officer, who has not yet been identified, walking an 11-year-old student down a hall on December 12. In a matter of seconds, the officer turns and picks the boy up and slams him to the ground. He then picks him up and does it a second time. Afterward, he yanks the child up from the ground and proceeds to roughly grab his arm as they continue walking.

Following the assault, the school immediately contacted the Vance County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Curtis R. Brame announced on Monday that the unidentified officer was fired after having been placed on paid leave Friday. The incident is now being reviewed by the State Bureau of Investigation.

“We appreciate all concerns regarding this matter,” Brame said in a statement. “However, we will ask that everyone remain patient while this investigation is ongoing.”

School district officials also spoke out in the wake of the assault.

"We are better than this. This child deserved better than this," Vance County Schools Superintendent Anthony Jackson said during a press conference on Monday according to CNN. "We will work tirelessly to ensure that this never happens again to another child in our school system."

The grandfather of the student in the video condemned the officer while also saying he forgives him.

“As a pastor I have to forgive him. I have no choice. But I still want justice done,” Pastor John Miles said. “As a grandfather, I’m just hurt right now.”

The incident is reminiscent of several videos of officers manhandling and/or being excessive in their dealings with children.

Just last month, a Florida deputy was fired after yanking a Black girl by her hair while telling surrounding students they were all "stupid little children." In September, a school resource officer was fired after arresting a 6-year-old student. Months earlier, in April, another Florida cop was seen assaulting a teen who'd already been pepper-sprayed outside of a McDonald's.
