Though many cast members are exiting Sex Education, fan-favorite Ncuti Gawta will not be one of them.
Variety reports that Gawta will return for the fourth season of the popular Netflix series. Gawta portrays Eric Effiong, the best friend of the show’s protagonist, Otis Millburn.
Hailing from creator, writer and executive producer Laurie Nunn, 'Sex Education' chronicles the adventures of Otis and his friends as they navigate their sexuality while coming of age as teenagers.
Gatwa’s return to Sex Education comes in the wake of the announcement that he would be the first Black actor to portray Doctor Who, replacing Black Mirror actress Jodie Whittaker.
Several 'Sex Education' stars have announced they won't return for season 4, including Patricia Allison, Tanya Reynolds, Rakhee Thakkar and 'Bridgerton' breakout Simone Ashley.
Variety states “despite the mini exodus, a source [states] season 4 of the show will ‘see a mixture of old and new exciting faces’ as the Moordale Secondary School alumni seek an alternative place to study – and romp – after the school lost its funding and was sold to developers.”
Fans of Gatwa could prepare to see more of him in the coming year.
In addition to reprising his Sex Education role and stepping into the shoes of Doctor Who, Gatwa will also appear alongside Issa Rae, Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film Barbie.
“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” he said in a prior statement about being the first Black Doctor Who. “A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”
