Sha’Carri Richardson is asking the media to treat her and other athletes with more respect during post-interviews, whether they have won or lost.

Richardson told reporters athletes deserve more respect after failing to qualify for the 200-meter final at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday.

“I’m coming to speak, not just on my behalf but on all athletes’ behalves, that when you guys do interviews, y’all should respect athletes more,” Richardson said. “Y’all should understand whether they’re coming from winning, whether they’re losing, whatever the case may be. Athletes deserve way more respect than when y’all just come and throw cameras into their faces.”

The sprinter made the media take note that athletes are still people and should be treated as such.

“Understand how an athlete operates and then ask your questions,” Richardson said. “Then be more understanding of the fact that they are still human, no matter just to the fact that y’all are just trying to put something out in an article to make a dollar. Thank you.”

Richardson took to her Twitter to quote an old tweet she originally posted last July after being suspended for one month for testing positive for marijuana. She shared she knew what she promised last year and wasn’t offering excuses.

“I know what I say, lol y’all can’t clown me,” Richardson said. “didn’t get it done, no excuses. Y’all don’t deserve my story NEXT!!”

In response to a Twitter user who criticized her lousy attitude, Richardson clarified that the problem is not her attitude but people’s belief that she should let people say whatever they want without responding.

“My attitude isn’t nasty,” Richardson said. “y’all just think I’m suppose to shut up & let y’all talk like I don’t have a keyboard too.”

Richardson finished with 22.47 and placed 10th in the women’s 200m final semifinals at the 2022 U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. As a result, she failed to qualify for the finals and will not represent Team USA at the World Championships in July.
