South African filmmaker and student Sibalhe Nkumbi was hospitalized after an Airbnb host in Amsterdam pushed her down a stairwell Saturday, July 9.

Nkumbi was in Amsterdam to support her friend who was involved in an art exhibition. In addition to lending her support, she was planning to write a review and give her perspective before the violent incident occurred over the weekend. All of this started when the young woman and her friends checked out of her Airbnb late. The host allegedly lost his temper over this and threw her down the stairs. British news outlet The Independent reported that the man was summoned by his wife to force the tourists to leave.

“We knew we were late,” she said in a video interview posted by YouTube user Kevin P. Roberson. “We heard the bell ring. The lady was clearly upset… she said this is not acceptable, you need to pack and leave now. I apologized profusely for us being late.”

In a video recorded during the altercation, the woman is seen being pushed down the stairs by the host. A friend in the background can be heard screaming "oh my God" as her friend lay at the base motionless. The unidentified man can be heard commanding the woman to leave before pushing her. And calling for an ambulance after she falls. The victim claims the man said that "you are not the queen you think you are… this is not Africa" during the attack.

Nkumbi sustained a concussion and several bruises on her arms.

“I don’t remember how it happened,” she says in the Youtube video. “I woke up in [the] hospital, in pain. And then I got the video of the story. Everyone was freaking out, the police came to question me.”

Appalling and unconscionable behavior against members of our community runs counter to everything Airbnb stands for. Our CEO Brian Chesky and I are reaching out to the affected guests. We will take the strongest actions we can against such abhorrent conduct, including banning people for life from our platform and assisting law enforcement with their investigation and potential prosecution. Nobody should ever be treated like this and it will not be tolerated.
