On Saturday, Sept. 9, Sloane Stephens beat opponent and friend Madison Keys, 6-3, 6-0, in just 61 minutes, in the U.S. Open final.

The match was the the first major singles final for Stephens and Keys, who both made history with Venus Williams last week when, for the first time in U.S. Open history, three black women competed in the semifinals.

Stephens, who had foot surgery in January, surprised her coach Kamau Murray in April when she called to say she was ready to practice. By May 16, Stephens was standing and hitting balls. The 24-year-old was ranked 957th after returning to the tour in July. Neither of them thought Stephens was on the verge of winning her first Grand Slam singles title.

Stephens and Keys, have been friends since their junior days. They've both played on Fed Cup teams and Olympic teams together. When Stephens realized she had defeated her friend to win the U.S. Open, she briefly lifted her arms in the air in celebration before having a real sisterhood moment at the net with Keys.

And then there's this hilarious moment when Stephens received her prize money for $3.7 million.

During the trophy ceremony, Stephens recognized that she had quite the journey – overcoming a major injury earlier in the year.

“I should just retire now,” Stephens said. “I told Maddie [Keys] I’m never going to be able to top this. I mean, talk about a comeback.”

Congratulations on a major win, Sloane Stephens!
