Snoop Dogg and director Allen Hughes are teaming up for an HBO drama series that will be written by Rodney Barnes ("The Boondocks," "Everybody Hates Chris").

Currently untitled, the project will be set in early 1980s Los Angeles, and will follow a family whose seemingly perfect life is turned upside down when politics meets community, and the 2 collide. That’s all HBO has revealed about the story thus far. 

I can only assume Snoop Dogg’s history, as someone who grew up in the LA area of the period, will influence the story here, as well as Reaganomics… but I’m certainly curious.

This will mark at least the 2nd period peace, set in the late 1970s/early 1980s, that will feature black casts, potentially heading to a TV screen near you in next TV season – the other being Netflix’s musical drama, "The Get Down," which will unfold over 13 episodes (each an hour long), tracking the history of hip-hop, and other innovative forms of music and art of the period. 

Snoop Dogg, who appeared on the season finale of "Empire" on fox, will executive produce the project, which Allen Hughes (who is also working on a reboot of "Roots" for the History channel) will direct.
