One of the pioneering rappers in the South African music industry died Wednesday, August 8, due to complications from a seizure.

ProKid, born Linda Mkhize, was visiting friends when he suffered a severe seizure, All Africa reports.

Paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to revive the 37-year-old artist. In the prime of his career, his hit singles "Soweto" and "Move" garnered fame among the South African music scene.

Mkhize was a rapper known for representing the struggles of those living in the South African townships. Before his death, he spent most of his time shepherding a new crop of rappers and talent looking to breakthrough.

He is survived by his mother, Fikile Mkhize;  father, Zwelakhe Kheswa; wife, Ayanda; his 3-year-old daughter Nonkanyezi and his brothers.

The nation currently mourns one of their great musicians. The South African government paid respect to the legendary rapper on Twitter:

In this time of mourning, family members have asked for respect and privacy from the media. May ProKid rest in peace.
