A South Carolina mom filed a police report for cyberbullying when her daughter's racist Snapchat post went viral.
According to the Atlanta Black Star, one student's outrage has become what seems like a bidding war. It all started with a Snapchat photo depicting two white girls in face masks, one white and one brown. The issue arises in the caption on the photo that read "Happy MLK Weekend."
Rick Wilson, the student who shared the photo, confirms that it was the caption that made him share the photo in the first place.
“I clicked it and I looked and I saw ‘Happy Martin Luther King Weekend,’ and I was like well that has to have a hidden meaning behind it," Wilson said.
This led him to share the photo with his own caption: “It’s crazy how racism still goes around in 2018. Share and make this viral.”
However, the request for viralness is what set one of the girl's mothers on a mission to file a police report for cyberbullying.
James Island Charter High School, the students' high school has since responded saying that the post “offended many people,” whether or not that was the intention of the post. They also added that the post "does not reflect the values and beliefs of the school.”
Despite running to the police, the girls have been apologetic — even though it seems moreso for the backlash than the actual post. One girl said that it was not a “conscious decision” and the other said that she was “disappointed” in herself for the “dumb decision.”
Whether you find the post offensive or not, once it's on social media, it's a free for all. Let this be a lesson in "think before you post."
