Actor Sterling K. Brown made history on Sunday night by becoming the first black man to be a recipient of the Golden Globe Award for best actor in a TV drama.
In his acceptance speech, Brown, who was nominated for his role in This Is Us, thanked his wife Ryan Bathe and promised his children he would be there to drop them off to school the next day. Brown also took the time to acknowledge the creator of the NBC series Dan Fogelman for writing an inclusive role made specifically for a black man.
“You wrote a role for a black man, that could only be played by a black man,” he said to Fogelman, who was in the audience. “And so, what I appreciate so much about this is that I’m being seen for who I am, and being appreciated for who I am. And it makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me, or dismiss anybody who looks like me. So thank you Dan.”
Last year, Brown wasn't nominated for the award in the same category for his role as Randall Pearson in the first season of This Is Us. The Hollywood Foreign Press did, however, recognize and nominate him for his work in the limited series The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.
Last summer, Brown was nominated for his first dramatic lead actor Emmy for his role as Randall Pearson and took home the trophy in September 2017.
For his very first Golden Globe win, Brown beat Jason Bateman for Netflix’s “Ozark,” Freddie Highmore for ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” Bob Odenkirk for AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” and Liev Schreiber for Showtime’s “Ray Donovan" to receive the award for best actor in a drama television series.
Congrats to him!
