The Supreme Court has been on a roll lately. Last week the high court upheld affirmative action in college admissions, forcing #beckywiththebadgrades to stay mad. This wee , the justices started out by striking down a Texas law that reduced the number of abortion clinics and created a burden for access to medical services for women. Texas House Bill 2 bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, requires abortion clinics to meet the same standards as hospital-style surgical centers and makes it mandatory that a doctor have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where he or she performs abortions. Only five abortion clinics in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston meet these requirements. In a 5-3 decision, SCOTUS struck the law down marking the largest abortion ruling in 25 years. Justice Stephen G. Breyer wrote the majority opinion in which he stated, "We conclude, that neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes. Each places a substantial obstacle in the path of women seeking a previability abortion, each constitutes an undue burden on abortion access, and each violates the Federal Constitution." This case is a monumental decision because proponents argue women should have a right to make decisions regarding what to do with their bodies. The court has protected the right to access so women have an opportunity to make the decision and receive adequate medical services.

Hillary Clinton sent immediate praise on Twitter.
SCOTUS's decision is a victory for women in Texas and across America. Safe abortion should be a right—not just on paper, but in reality. -H

This fight isn't over: The next president has to protect women's health. Women won't be "punished" for exercising their basic rights. -H
