Two men have been arrested for the murder of Lincoln University student body president D’Angelo Bratton-Bland.
The 23-year-old Chicago native, who was set to graduate from the HBCU this May with a degree in elementary and special education, was shot in the chest on Tuesday night in Jefferson City, Missouri.
In a press release, Jefferson City police revealed 19-year-old Michael Bouchee had been taken into custody on second-degree murder charges for his role in the death of the HBCU student.
Along with Bouchee, 29-year-old Deangelo Frazier has also been named as a suspect in Bratton-Bland's killing. Initially, the two were arrested for drug charges in the neighborhood where the student was killed. Witnesses, however, claimed the duo had been threatening people with guns who were standing near vehicles. According to police, there is no evidence to suggest Bratton-Bland did anything to provoke the shooting.
His family is still searching for a motive.
“Was it a hate crime?" asked his second mother and former principal Tiffany Harston. "Was it just him at the wrong place at the wrong time? We just want some justice.”
Her son was also openly gay and often returned home to speak to youth from his alma mater.
“He was so touched by the way we never gave up on him that he wanted to become an advocator,” said Harston.
