News coming from the Edinburgh International TV Festival is that Michaela Coel has a new show coming to BBC Two called Jan 22nd. While her new show is different from her breakout hit Chewing Gum, it hits on the same topics of love, relationships, dating and consent.

Jan 22nd is written by and stars Coel as the series’ main character, Arabella. According to the series’ official description, as quoted by Deadline, the London-set series revolves around Arabella’s “raw and personal experience of consent.”

“(The series) explores the question of sexual consent in contemporary life and how, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, people make the distinction between liberation and exploitation. Set in London, the story centers on Arabella (Coel) whose raw and personal experience of consent sits at the heart of the story. Through Arabella we meet a group of fictional friends and colleagues whose sexual adventures frequently collide with a world in which new codes of sexual practice are emerging,” states Deadline.

Coel is executive producing through FALKNA Productions along with BBC Two’s Phil Clarke and Various Artists Ltd.’s Piers Wenger.

Coel will be on BBC Two later this year in the BBC-Netflix joint series Black Earth Rising, in which Coel plays a Rwandan genocide survivor who grows up in an adopted British home, becoming a prosecutor in international criminal law. It’s when she takes a case involving an African militia leader that old emotional wounds open up and her life changes forever.
