Good Trouble brings fans back into the lives of their favorite young adults as they figure out what it means to be a grown-up in a complicated world.

Shadow and Act’s Aramide Tinubu sat down with cast members Cierra Ramirez, Sherry Cola, Zuri Adele, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence, Priscilla Quintana and Bryan Craig to talk about what fans can expect from the upcoming season, which airs Thursday, and how the show has impacted them personally.

Ramirez, who plays Mariana, said that her character has had a lot of growing up to do thanks to recent developments in her life within the series.

“I think you’ve definitely seen a lot of growth with Mariana, with Callie leaving that was a big toll on her,” said Ramirez. “We saw her alone for the first time and just be an independent person and really kind of come into her own skin.”

She also said Mariana has also had to make amends with people in her life, particularly the group working with Mariana on her app.

“You’re going to see a lot of growth between the team, especially navigating the fallout after the app was revitalized,” Ramirez said. “The dynamics are definitely interesting because there’s a lot of powerful women in that room.”

Hunton, who plays Davia, also talked about growth, but in terms of romance. She said that while her character’s relationship with Dennis (Josh Pence) is one of the most compelling relationships on the show, their relationship originally wasn’t planned by the writers.

“What’s interesting with that is when [the writers] started the show they had no intention of Dennis and Davia being together. That’s just how Josh and I’s chemistry read on-screen and we just have really great on-camera chemistry together and it just grew and developed into that over time,” said Hunton. “Everyone loves to see a natural progression of friends to lovers. And I think because it wasn’t even in the plan with the writers, we saw them really…antagonize each other and then it grew into friendship and then it grew into something more…It gives a natural progression, it gives a realism to it.”

Cola, who plays Alice, said that her character’s trauma also helped her release her own personal trauma.

“I’m just so grateful to be able to release and express through our craft. Not everybody’s able to say that they can show up to work and unpack trauma on the screen and in real life,” said Cola. “I think there’s a lot of alignment with Sherry and Alice and I’m just so grateful that a lot of stories that I never saw growing up are on the screen because of Good Trouble and I’ve learned so much on this show and we continue to have conversations that are tough and other shows aren’t ready to have.”
