Tamaya Dennard means business and she made that perfectly clear during her swearing-in ceremony as Cincinnati City Councilwoman. In a bold nod to Shirley Chisolm-the political icon and first black woman elected to the United States Congress, Dennard showed up to her swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday carrying a bright red folding chair. What's the significance of this gesture? Chisolm, who was also the first black major-party candidate to run for President of the United States once famously said, "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." And, Dennard literally did just that.
"If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair."
Yesterday, because of your all's support, I was sworn in as a Cincinnati City Councilwoman and President Pro Tempore of Council.
Because of you, we're bringing a folding chair to City Hall.

Dennard, who won her seat in her first political bid for office, was clear about the changes she aims to bring to her city saying, "I'm here to work on issues at the root cause, and not Band-Aid solutions,” WLWT reported. “Yeah, we can open more shelters, but we need affordable housing. We need income-based housing. That's the issue."
We see you, sis.
Seeing @TDennard speak at #GalvanizeOhio it was pretty obvious we needed her and more women like her in office ASAP. https://t.co/BhAFSueFh7
