Jesse L. Martin and the cast of The Irrational give fans a first look at what they can expect in a first look video, exclusive to Shadow and Act.

Martin, who plays behavioral scientist Alec Mercer, said in the video that the series is a “standard procedural with nothing standard about it.” He also described his character as an “emotional detective,” finding his clues through emotional and behavioral patterns rather than physical clues.

The rest of the cast, including Arash Demaxi, Molly Kunz, Maahra Hill and Travina Springer also talk about how the show dives into human psychology, which is both Alec’s “superpower” in solving crime as well as his fatal flaw when it comes to personal relationships.

Shadow and Act can also share the loglines for the first three episodes that give Mercer various challenges when it comes to applying his knowledge of behavior. The pilot follows Merce as he investigates the murder of a fashion influencer. The influencer’s boyfriend, “a decorated soldier and son of a senator,” has confessed, but Mercer feels there’s more to the case.

Episode 2, “Dead Woman Walking,” finds Mercer being called on by investigative journalist CJ for help after she is poisoned with a deadly, rare nerve agent. Mercer has to solve the cases before time runs out.

Episode 3, “The Barnum Effect,” finds Mercer and his team to investigate the crash of a passenger plane, casting the pilot in a suspicious light. The team must figure out the pilot’s personal motivations and put the puzzle of clues together.

The Irrational debuts Sept. 25 at 10/9c on NBC.
