Spelman and Morehouse are two historic higher education institutions that are deeply rooted in rich traditions. There’s Founder’s Day, Granddaughters Club, Spring Fest and, of course, homecoming. The winter holidays are no exception, and for 91 years, the two colleges have been coming together for the annual Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert.

This year, as usual, the program was performed over three nights. The voices of the Spelman College Glee Club and the Morehouse College Glee Club soared at Morehouse on Dec. 1 and 3, and switched venues in between on Dec. 2, at Spelman.

The two singing groups served a contemporary spin on traditional holiday music, as well as offering time-tested favorites such as Spelman’s “We Are Christmas” and Morehouse’s popular rendition of “Betelehemu.”

Harold Martin Jr., C’2002, interim president of Morehouse, said, “The annual Christmas Carol Concert is a signature event that attracts visitors from across the state and nation to the AUC to hear our talented and hard-working students sing. This shared gift from Morehouse and Spelman is our way of saying ‘happy holidays’ to the community we love being a part of.”

The annual musical event kicked off in December 1927 and was born from an idea by John Hope of Morehouse, and Florence Matilda Read from Spelman – the presidents of the two institutions, at the time. This year, the choirs were led by Spelman Glee Club Director Kevin Johnson and Morehouse Glee Club Director Dr. David E. Morrow.
