A Chinese laundry commercial that aired on television and in theaters recently is making waves on social media, but not in a good way. The spot depicts a Chinese woman washing clothes when a black man, with paint splattered all over his shirt and face, enters the room and walks toward her. They lean in for a kiss when she stuffs a pod of detergent in his mouth and tosses him in the washer.
He then pops out of the washer as a Chinese man with a clean shirt.

Shanghaiist points out on its blog that the concept is taken from another commercial which aired in China 9 years ago. This commercial shows an Italian woman approached by an Italian man, and he is thrown into the washer and pops back out as a black man.
With so many racialized problems over here in the states, we sometimes forget our neighbors around the world are riddled with racist attitudes as well. We know diversity is an issue, but really!? Shanghaiist also pointed out this problem specifically in China, where John Boyega was barely seen on the movie poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
