With much of Houston under water, thousands stranded in their homes, and the death toll from Hurricane Harvey climbing to 9, the ongoing effects of the natural disaster are not to be taken lightly; so when Ken Storey, a professor of sociology at the University of Tampa, sent out a tweet suggesting that the hurricane was karmic retribution for a state that voted overwhelmingly for Trump, the backlash was instant.
The tweet, which captured by Campus Reform before Storey deleted it said, "I don't believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully, this will help them realize the GOP doesn't care about them." In response, Eric Cardenas, director of public information at the University of Tampa, issued a statement saying, "The University of Tampa stands with the people impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and our thoughts and prayers are with all involved." The statement went on to distance the University from the professor's comments saying, "The comments made by Kenneth Storey were made via his private social media account. They were not made within his capacity as a faculty member, and they don't represent the University's views."
Storey has since tweeted an apology for his insensitive comment saying, "I deeply regret a statement I posted yesterday. I never meant to wish ill will upon any group. I hope all affected by Harvey recover quickly."

As of now, no disciplinary action has been taken against the professor.
