A sweet moment between a teen and her hardworking dad has warmed hearts across the internet.
Nevaeha Smith, 14, had a school dance coming up, and she found her dream dress: a two-piece number with a blinged-out top and pastel floral bottom. Like many teens, she asked her parents for the dress.
There was one problem: the price. Her father, Ricky, was already working three jobs to support their family, and he wasn’t sure how he would be able to pay for the $200 dress.
"I looked at the price, and I was like, 'Uh, not really sure, but I can see what I can do,'" Ricky said to ABC News.
The dad did what he had to do. Even though he already worked six to seven days per week, he picked up extra shifts to make sure his baby girl got her gown. When he finally reached his goal, he told the girl’s mom, Kellie, who suggested he plan a surprise.
"I was working at McDonald’s that day, and I put the dress in the back," Ricky said. "She came, and I brought it out and told her that her grandmother bought it for her, and I told her, 'This ain’t the dress you wanted, but I hope you like it.'"
Nevaeha put on a brave face, but on the inside, she was worried.
"I was thinking, 'This is going to be an old lady dress,'" said Nevaeha.
In a now-viral video posted by Kellie, Nevaeha is overcome with emotion when Ricky surprised her with the dress.
"I'm grateful that he found a way to get me the dress, and I really appreciate how many jobs he worked," Nevaeha told CBS News.
Ricky encouraged parents to do whatever they can to make their children happy, even if it seems out of reach.
"I just don't want people to think just because you don't have the money you can't make your kids happy, because you can," Ricky said.
