This weekend, one lucky Maryland family will see three of their relatives graduate in one day.
There are many inspirational stories during graduation season every year. Fox 5 DC reports retired U.S. Army combat veteran Shamir Taylor will graduate the University of Maryland Saturday.
There is one catch. He won't be doing it alone. His wife, Nyema and his father, Raymond Richardson, will also be graduating alongside him.
Shamir told Fox 5 he started school while serving in the military but abruptly ended it in the early 2000s. Some few years, he decided to obtain a degree in business administration.
In addition to being a mother of two, Nyema is a cancer survivor. The graphic communications graduate went through several rounds of chemotherapy and treatment to make it to the big day.
"Education has always been important," Richardson said. He added he wanted to continue his education as something to do after retirement. Richardson was a U.S. Army Master Sergeant and will be a retired federal worker soon. He will be awarded a degree in public safety.
He and Shamir even had the opportunity to some of the same classes while pursuing their degrees.
Shamir has a close, tight-knit bond with his father. Taking the same courses and picking each other's brains made Shamir remember "those Iraq days when we served in Iraq together."
For Nyema, the last two years were rough. In 2017, she was diagnosed with cancer. She told the outlet she was humbled to overcome everything. Nyema launched a clothing line as well in the midst of her recovery process.
The family of scholars plans to celebrate their academic achievements with a cookout with family members and neighbors this weekend.
According to The Baltimore Sun, billionaire and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will give the commencement address for Saturday's ceremony.
Congrats to the trio!
