Imagine being a black student at a school named after a Confederate. Well, the students at Jefferson Davis Magnet School in Mississippi know what that's like. Named after the Confederate states president, the school will be stripped of its current name next year.

So, whose name will adorn the school building?

Stakeholders voted for the name change on October 5 at the Jackson Davis Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting. The students, parents and teachers believe the new name is more fitting for the predominantly black school. The public school's enrollment in 2017 showed 98 percent of black students, with an overall enrollment of 97 percent black students.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson said to the board.

Jefferson confirmed that the school's community wanted “to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”

“I wholeheartedly agree with the name,” noted Board President Camille Simms.

The name change will go into effect for the 2018-19 school year.
