Twitter and Reddit have seemingly confirmed a video featuring diners arguing over splitting a hefty restaurant bill was staged after going viral on social media.

Complex reported TikToker @viccgotti initially posted the video, which showed several members having a heated debate over splitting a $4,600 bill at someone’s birthday dinner.

“WHO WAS WRONG IN THIS SITUATION? THAT BILL WAS OVER 4600 dollars. #viccgotti #debate,” ViccGotti said in the post’s caption.

At the beginning of the 21-second clip, one man stated he was only responsible for what he ordered on the check.

“I’m not splitting the bill. That’s crazy,” the man firmly told the others at the table.

As he continued, another man interjected and did a run-down of what everyone ordered at the establishment. A third member pointed out the expensive items the group members ordered and raised an issue about why splitting the bill was an option.

“Look at what all they got, and they talking about splitting the bill,” the person said in the clip.

“We come together; we split the bill. Period,” another person added.

The video amassed more than 1.1M likes, 53.3K shares and 56K comments on TikTok and has since made its rounds on Twitter. While the video sparked a debate among social media users, it was confirmed to be “staged” by the social platform and Reddit.

On Monday, moderators for the subreddit PublicFreakOut removed the clip and released a statement regarding the viral video.

“We would like to inform you that staged videos are not allowed on this platform. We prioritize authenticity and strive to provide a genuine and trustworthy experience for our users. Staged videos can mislead or deceive viewers, which goes against our community guidelines,” the statement read.

“By disallowing staged videos, we aim to maintain the integrity of the content shared on our platform. This policy ensures that our community can rely on the content they consume and helps foster a more transparent and engaging environment for everyone involved.”
