I haven’t been a regular watcher of W. Kamau Bell’s series on FX; I did watch a few of the early episodes, and wasn’t immediately hooked on his style. And with so much else competing for my time, I never really returned to it.

I’ve caught a few clips from the show here and there, usually when friends share on Facebook or Twitter. And I’d say that I probably appreciate his interview segments with guests more than his stand-up routine.

But no matter, I’m happy for the brotha, and glad to see that the show continues to blossom, and attract attention. And a hat-tip to Chris Rock for giving him a chance.
I’ll start to work my way back into the series, especially in light of this morning’s news that FX has promoted the show from a weekly to a nightly series on its spin-off network, FXX, scheduled to launch this fall!
And even more interesting is that they are putting him directly up against The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, at 11pm, every night.
Currently it airs on Thursday nights at 11pm, so it was already in competition with The Daily Show, but that was just one night a week. It’s increasing to 4 nights a week now, so let’s see how this shakes out, with both shows having a few similarities.
I wonder if BET will bring back Don’t Sleep! – the TJ Holmes-hosted news/commentary program, which also aired at 11pm, weeknights (although it was later downsized to just one night a week)…

FX MAKES W. KAMAU BELL STRIP

“TOTALLY BIASED” GOES FROM WEEKLY TO NIGHTLY SERIES

Acclaimed Late Night Comedy Series Exec Produced by Chris Rock To Air Monday through Thursday Nights With “Best Of” Show Sundays

NEW YORK, March 28, 2013 – FX has gotten decidedly more biased, taking its late night comedy series Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell from weekly to a five-night a week late night strip this Fall with the launch of FXX. It was announced today by Nick Grad, Executive Vice President, Original Programming & Development, FX Networks.

Totally Biased will debut its new format this fall with the launch of FXX with 130 new original episodes, airing Monday through Thursday nights at 11:00 PM ET/PT, with Best of the Week compilation episodes Sunday nights at 11:00 PM ET/PT. Until then, new episodes of Totally Biased in its currently weekly iteration will resume on FX on Thursday, May 9 at 11:00pm ET/PT.

Totally Biased, from Bell and Executive Producers Chris Rock, Chuck Sklar and Keri Smith Esguia, stars standup comedian W. Kamau Bell as he hilariously dissects politics, pop culture, race, religion, sex and the media from his own unique point of view. The show features live guests and taped segments. Recent guests have included Don Cheadle, David Alan Grier, George Takei, Wanda Sykes, John Oliver, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and journalists Rachel Maddow, Matt Taibbi and Dave Zirin. The show is produced by FX Productions.

W. Kamau Bell, recently declared by The New York Times to be “the most promising talent in political comedy in many years,” is one of the fastest rising socio-political comics in the United States. A founding member of the stand-up comedy collective “Laughter Against the Machine,” Kamau is also co-host of The Field Negro Guide to Arts & Culture podcast with Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid. His recent stand up album, Face Full of Flour, was named one of the Top 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2010 by iTunes and Punchline Magazine. Bell is best known for his critically-acclaimed solo show “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour,” which was a Time Out New York Critic’s Pick in the 2010 NY Comedy Festival, and a comedy pick in The Guardian during its 2011 run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This March, Bell will bring his solo show to colleges across the country.
