On Monday, when Cassandra Peoples stopped at her local Gainesville area Tropical Smoothie Café to order her regular "Detox Island" smoothie, she got a little more than she bargained for when she noticed "black chick" written as an identifier on her receipt. "When I saw black chick where the name was supposed to be, I'm like 'I know I told them Cassandra,'" she told CBS 4 News.
After the incident, Peoples took her grievance to the organization's corporate headquarters in Atlanta saying, "I mean I want some answers." She went on to say that she just wanted to be called by the name like anyone else. "Cassandra. My birth name," she said. "Not a black chick."
In a written statement to The Independent Florida Alligator, company spokeswoman Andie Biederman said, "This type of conduct clearly does not reflect the values of our brand or our commitment to creating a welcoming environment at each and every location. We apologize to all of our loyal guests." The general manager of the location where the incident took place, has since stated that the employee responsible had been fired.
