While in Miami, Florida to give his Cuba policy address, Trump made it a point to single out Assata Shakur, and demanded that she be returned to the United States.

Trump called her a “cop killer,” in reference to her 1970s conviction for killing a New Jersey state trooper. The legitimacy of the conviction was and still is widely disputed.

Shakur later escaped from prison. She was granted political asylum in Cuba to avoid U.S. extradition, and is currently on the FBI’s most wanted fugitives list.

Cuba’s response to Trump's demands?

Negative.

Deputy director of American affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs Gustavo Machin put it plainly, Yahoo News reported, “I can say it is off the table.”

New Jersey officials, headed by Governor Chris Christie and Senator Bob Menendez, have confirmed that Shakur’s return should actually be on the table before the U.S. eases any tensions with Cuba.

A letter from Menendez addressed to then-Secretary of State John Kerry, said that the senator believed that Cuba’s sanctuary efforts to Shakur “is an intolerable insult to all those who long to see justice served.”

In responding to Trump, Machin said that he believes there is a political agenda against Shakur, stating, “There are very serious doubts about that case. We consider that a politically motivated case against that lady.”

The plot thickens. We shall see what happens next!
