A report conducted by the United Nations’ Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent makes the case that the history of slavery in the United States calls for reparations for African Americans.

The group, which consists of human rights experts and attorneys, provided the United Nations Human Rights Council with a report that proves a direct correlation between slavery and the present racial issues that plague the country. Some of the present day issues included police-involved killings, which the report describes as a “human rights crisis.”

Although the report has no authority to force Congress’ hand to provide reparations, it does give insight into what many African Americans already know, but others choose to ignore.

It also offers some of the following recommendations for reparations: “a formal apology, health initiatives, educational opportunities … psychological rehabilitation, technology transfer and financial support, and debt cancellation.”

What do you think of the report and their suggestions? Let us know in the comments below!
