There are many sacrifices a parent must make to protect and care for their child. One Virginia mom showed exactly what she would do to care for her child and she's now dealing with the consequences.

In September, Norfolk, Virginia resident Sarah Sims says her fourth grade daughter was being bullied at Ocean View Elementary School and, after she placed multiple calls and sent multiple emails about the issue with no response or assistance from the school, she decided to take the investigation into her own hands. This dedicated mom placed a recording device in her child’s backpack, in hopes of catching classroom audio that would prove her case and protect her child.

“If I’m not getting an answer from you, what am I left to do?” Sims asks in a report to 10 On You’re Side.

After the device was discovered in the child's backpack, the 9-year-old was moved to another classroom and Sims was charged with a felony use of a device to intercept oral communication – a crime that carries a jail sentence of potentially five years. Sims was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor.

Her attorney, Kristin Paulding, doesn’t believe the charges will hold in court. She told 10 On Your Side: “They aren’t making this about that classroom. These are charges that carry jail time. We are at the very early stages of this, but even at the early stages, I think the community needs to know that this is happening, because any parent out there that is sending their child to school now could be at risk for something that happened to Sarah.”

Due to the current investigation, no one from Ocean View Elementary has been able to comment on the incident. Sims has a preliminary hearing set for January 2018.
