Kamaiyah is an emerging rap star and East Oakland native who recently dropped a documentary about her rise to fame, titled A Good Night in the Ghetto (named after her mixtape which dropped earlier this year). Kamaiyah, known as “Oakland’s Queen of hip-hop,” is widely recognized for her tracks “How Does it Feel” and “Out the Bottle.” Her sound is reminiscent of classical west coast music, carefree and ’90s-inspired.

Directed by Chris Simmons, the documentary leads up to Kamaiyah performing her first headlining show in Oakland. It takes viewers through her past, her relationship with her music and the challenges she faced losing her best friend to cancer. Watching the documentary definitely gives fans insight into Kamaiyah’s dedication to her music, and the positive impacts that her rise to fame has on her community in East Oakland.
