The opening credits for the previous 2 seasons of of FX’s American Horror Story were fun. A sufficiently creepy collage of both still and moving images, with an eerie musical overlay and sound effects.
Via Twitter earlier today, show co-creator Ryan Murphy shared what will be the opening credits for the series’ upcoming third season, adding that the sequence includes clues to how the new season’s narrative will progress. See if you can spot them.
Although names noticeably absent from the opening credit sequence are Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe. I expected to, at least, see Bassett’s name, given that she’s one of the leads this season. I suppose she’ll likely receive something like a “special guest star” credit.
Expectations are even higher for American Horror Story: Coven, which will explore “themes of race and oppression and family — especially mothers and daughters — along with laughs and scares and a few tears,” as executive producer Tim Minear puts it.

Here’s a breakdown if you missed it previously:

American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over three hundred years have passed since the turbulent days of Salem and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe, who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona, the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

Angela Bassett plays Marie Laveau – a practioner of voodoo in the 1800s who was called “the voodoo queen of New Orleans” and, according to folklore, danced with a snake and presided over bloody rituals.

The new season arrives on October 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

You’ll find the opening credit sequence below, followed by 2 short teasers featuring Bassett’s Laveau character.
